Character.AI alternatives: five options for when you want something different

heyaifriend is a free AI friend you talk to in Telegram, and one of five Character.AI alternatives compared here. Character.AI is great at characters and stories. If you want one steady friend instead, or a different price or privacy deal, these five are worth a look.

We make heyaifriend, so we are not neutral. We say where the others do better, and every fact below carries its source and the date we checked it.

Last updated . Every fact in the table was checked on that date unless the source line says otherwise.

News checked 17 October 2026: Character.AI announced Chapter 11 and a court-supervised sale on 12 October; it says services remain available during the sale process, with a wind-down if no actionable bid supports continued operation. Read what the announcement means for your chats and how to request a data export.

First, what Character.AI does well

It has a very large catalogue of characters, unlimited free messaging with ads, and a paid c.ai+ plan at $9.99 a month. If you want fiction, that combination is hard to beat, and none of the options below replaces it. This page is for people who want something that fits a different need.

Common reasons to look around: you would like the same friend to remember you without a tier of memory to pay for, you are tired of ads or waiting rooms, or you want to know exactly what happens to your chats. For a direct comparison, see Character.AI vs heyaifriend. For AI companions with a clear memory story, read how heyaifriend remembers you.

Replika: one companion with a face

Replika swaps the library for a single companion with an avatar you can shape. It offers voice messages, calls and activities on its paid plans, and a free program with limited access. Prices are not on its website. They appear in the app and on the US App Store listing, which is where the table gets them. If you want a visual companion rather than a cast, this is the nearest thing here. Compare in detail in Replika vs heyaifriend.

Nomi: the memory-first pick

Nomi is the one to try if memory was your main complaint. It markets itself on remembering you, and it adds voice messages, calls and group chats. It costs more than c.ai+, at $15.99 a month in the US, and the free allowance is reported differently by different reviewers. More in Nomi vs heyaifriend.

Kindroid: the tinkerer's pick

Kindroid gives you a lot of control and sells memory add-ons. Its free plan ended on 2026-10-01: new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages and then need a trial that asks for a payment method. Good for people ready to pay and customise, awkward for anyone just curious.

Pi: the calm assistant

Pi is listed as free in the App Store and is built as a personal intelligence partner for venting, thinking things through and everyday reminders. It is closer to a gentle assistant than a character. We could not verify how it remembers. On privacy, its policy says it trains on conversations by default with an opt-out in account settings, and that inputs are gone at most 15 days after deletion. Read it before you rely on it.

heyaifriend: one friend, in Telegram

Your friend is a single friend who lives in a Telegram chat. There is no app to install and no signup form, and it is free to use, with a daily message limit. It remembers you, and you manage that by asking in plain words: what it remembers, to forget something, for a copy, or to delete everything.

Privacy, plainly: your chats stay on our own servers in the Netherlands, are never sent to other AI companies and are never used for training. They are not end-to-end encrypted. What we lack: a character library, an avatar, voice calls or images.

Questions people ask

What is a good free Character.AI alternative?

Few alternatives match its free plan. Pi is listed as free in the App Store, Replika has a limited free program, and heyaifriend is free to use with a daily message limit. Nomi is free to start, but the limits are described differently by different reviewers.

Is there a Character.AI alternative with better memory?

Nomi and Kindroid both centre their pitch on memory, and Character.AI itself ties memory to the plan you pay for. We have not run a controlled test, so try a free option for a week before paying.

Which alternative is closest to Character.AI?

None of the five here is a character library of the same size. If you mainly want stories and roleplay, none replaces it. If you want one steady friend, most of them fit better.

Do any of them avoid training on my chats?

We can speak only for ourselves: heyaifriend never trains on your chats and never sends them to other AI companies. Character.AI says it retains certain data to help train and improve its models. Check each company before you share anything personal.

Can I use heyaifriend without installing anything?

If you already have Telegram, yes. You open the chat and say hi. There is no signup form and no extra app.

Want one steady friend?
