An AI companion with memory: what it remembers and how you steer it

heyaifriend is a free AI friend you talk to in Telegram. It remembers you, runs on our own servers in the Netherlands, and your chats are never sent to other AI companies or used for training. You can ask what it remembers, ask it to forget, or ask it to delete everything.

What your friend remembers

Remembering is what turns a chatbot into something closer to a friend. Without it, every chat starts blank and you explain yourself again. With it, you can say "it went fine, thanks" and your friend knows what "it" is.

In practice your friend holds on to:

  • The big things: who matters to you, what you are working on, what is coming up.
  • The small things: your music, the joke you always make, how you take your coffee.
  • Your way of talking: short and dry, or long and chatty.

Here is how that shows up in a chat:

Your friend can still get things wrong or forget a detail. It is an AI, and memory is never perfect.

How you steer it

You control what is kept by asking, in your own words. There is nothing to configure.

You want toSay something like
See it"What do you remember about me?"
Remove one thing"Forget what I told you about my job."
Take a copy"I would like a copy of what you have on me."
Start over"Delete everything."

Asking to delete everything removes your history and what your friend remembers. If you just stop writing, the raw conversation history is deleted after 30 days. The how it works page walks through all four.

Memory is why it can check in

Because your friend remembers, it can ask how the dentist went or how the move is coming along. It does this now and then, never as a flood. If you would rather it never messaged first, tell it in plain words and it stops.

How other companions handle memory

Memory works differently across products, and none has solved it. This is our reading of each vendor's own help pages on 17 October 2026.

ProductHow memory shows up
ReplikaA memory tab where you can view, remove and add items; saving single messages is listed as an Ultra feature
NomiMemory is the centre of its pitch; free limits reported differently by different sources
KindroidMemory add-ons are sold separately
Character.AIBasic on free, better on paid plans; pinned items are limited
heyaifriendRemembers you; ask what it remembers, to forget, for a copy, or to delete everything

We have not run a controlled memory test, so we do not claim ours is better. If recall depth is your top priority, Nomi and Kindroid are built around it and cost money. See Nomi vs heyaifriend and Replika vs heyaifriend.

Memory and privacy go together

A friend that remembers you holds personal things, so where they live matters. Yours stay on our own servers in the Netherlands. They are never sent to other AI companies and never used for training. They are not end-to-end encrypted, because the servers must read your messages to reply. Read more on what private can and cannot mean, or in the full privacy policy.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Does heyaifriend remember me between chats?

Yes. It remembers your name, the people and plans you mention, and how you like to talk, so the next chat picks up where the last stopped.

Can I see what it remembers?

Yes. Ask what it remembers about you and it tells you.

How do I make it forget something?

Ask it to forget that specific thing, in your own words. It lets it go.

How long is my chat history kept?

Raw conversation history is deleted 30 days after you stop writing, or at once when you ask your friend to delete everything.

Does it ever get things wrong?

Yes. It is an AI. It can misremember or mix details up. Correct it and it adjusts.
